Definition of a UFO (in the crafty world): Unfinished object or project,
often found hiding in craft rooms, under the bed, or tucked away in a
corner of the closet in a plastic bag.
Did you start a scrapbook
when your kid was a baby? Is your baby now entering kindergarten but the
scrapbook is still in pieces? Did you begin knitting a hat last winter
but then....summer happened? Is your sewing and mending pile giving you
grief? I think you get the idea--let's tackle those UFO's! Spend an
afternoon at The Hub socializing while finishing up your art/craft
project.
Any UFO project that can be worked on in a room with tables
and chairs is welcome. Need to borrow a sewing machine? We have a
handful that can be loaned for the day, let Katie know you need one when
you sign up.

The UpTown of Oakland presents Junk Folk Night:
Thee Hobo Gobbelins, The Crux (CD Release), 5 Cent Coffee
[https://www.facebook.com/events/599947983398688]
Thursday, November 7, 9:00pm
Come
for an evening of wild speakeasy/carnival music with three stompy folk
bands! Thee Hobo Gobbelins, The Crux, and 5 Cent Coffee... This evening
is a CD release party for The Crux's new album, THE RATCATCHER!
21+, 9pm. 8 dollars.
The Uptown Nightclub [1928 Telegraph Ave, Oakland]
Thee Hobo Gobbelins:
The Hobo Gobbelins emerge from the pulsing art vortex of Oakland, Ca.,
the green-skinned child of punk rock, avant-garde performance art and
hobo soul. Drawing on a dizzying array of influences, the band
incorporates traditional sounds of Americana and the Old World with the
horrors of modernity. Monsters from folklore and fiction wriggle
alongside freight-train spirituals and drinking songs. The result is a
disturbing haunted house for the ear, a nightmare carnival that is at
turns goofy and murderous. Human audiences drink more, dance better, and
writhe uncontrollably to goblin beatings- er, beats. Incidentally,
audience is the goblin word for “food that screams”.
The Crux
(CD Release Party!): The Crux is an encyclopedic band of
multi-instrumentalists, performing barn dance tunes, klezmer jams,
pirate shanties, and bluesy dirges in a theatrical performance style.
Their sound is an energetic brand of folk music enlivened with a taste
of punk.
5 Cent Coffee: 5 Cent Coffee is a 4 piece post
modern jug band full of grit and carnival hokum. We play original songs
set in the dusty American tradition of travelling circuses and rail
riders down on their luck. With soaring vocals, sometimes two
accordions, sometimes two ukuleles, washboard and junk percussion, our
sound is big and brash but soft and mournful, and always
compelling.

Interview with the...
[theatomicmachines.com] [soundcloud.com/theatomicmachines] [theatomicmachines@gmail.com]
Some of the questions to be asked by Dr.G.:
* What motivates you to make music for the revolution?
* What makes the Bay Area great?
Atomic Machines are Dan Dafoe (Guitar/Vocals), Kyle Barton (Bass) and Josh Conrow (Drums). Hailing from the Mecca of old school bay punk rock, Atomic Machines are based in the San Francisco/Bay Area with influences ranging from The Clash, NOFX, Minor Threat and Rancid. Atomic Machines produce a unique blend of old school bay punk rock with a classic SoCal style. Dan, Kyle and Josh have a natural song writing chemistry that creates a wide variety of sound. The Atomic Machines are exploding onto the scene with their lively stage presence and ruthless determination. Atomic Machine shows are filled with crowd involvement and back to back high energy songs. 2013 will be a big year for the Atomic Machines as they plan to release their first full length album and plan to hit the road for their first cross country tour. The band also has many shows lined up in and around the San Francisco/Bay Area

Interview with...
Batz & Richard of "LEGENDS of Heroes & Villains Publishing"
to invite you to their book release party on Oct. 26th for their new title "Taffy's Nightmare Tales" Issue #1, with a book signing on Monday, October 28, and the launch of the Kickstarter on the 31, for "Kitty & Batz" Volume 1. They are looking forward to their next convention appearance in Santa Rosa, November 30!
"LEGENDS of Heroes & Villains Publishing" [707-334-5760] [www.legendsofheroesvillains.com] works with Waterfront Comics [609 Main Street, Suisun City, CA 94585] to host comix creator parties, events, and expose you to strange & interesting comics, from the underground to superheroes with DC and Marvel comics!
This Halloween, at Waterfront Comics in Suisun City, you will see the launch of "Taffy's Nightmare Tales" Issue 1, during 'Halloween Comicfest'! "Taffy's Nightmare Tales" is an anthology of stories, created to terrify the reader, as they did so many years ago!
Written and drawn by Richard Zerga, with additional art and layout by his daughter, Kristi 'Batz' Zerga, is strongly reminiscent of the EC Comics days, before the comic code. Drawing inspiration from EC artists, such as; Jack Davis, Graham 'Ghastly' Ingles, Wallace Wood, and from 'Creepy' and 'Eerie' comics, artist Bernie Wrightson, the first tale is pure black and white horror, titled; 'Blood Asylum'. This four part story tells the tale Dr. Turninkoff, and the twisted and macabre experiments he performs in the asylum of blood! With narration by Taffy T. Clown, he walks the reader through the long, cold and decaying corridors, into the darkened rooms of the patients, many of whom will never leave the asylum alive! The second story tells the tale of a man who comes to grip with the crimes he has committed, and the stiff penalty he will pay!
October 31, 2013, Kitty & Batz hit the public square in the face, again! Not with their bats, or sais, or fists, but with a Kickstarter for "Kitty & Batz" Volume 1, "Hypnotic Homicide"! But before that, Batz will be wired up with her favorite flavored frappuccino from 'Hypno Coffee', and talking about their Kickstarter at "Halloween Comicfest" during the release party of "Taffy's Nightmare Tales"! This Kickstarter is going to be a compilation of Issues 1, 2, 3, along with original stories that WILL NOT be offered anywhere else. Some of the rewards will include t-shirts, posters, prints, screen printed cards, and more! There will also be the most impressive tiers, which will include, extremely limited edition, hardback volumes, numbered, with variant covers by Billy Martinez, Tone Rodriguez, Joe Weems, and the man himself, John Kricfalusi, creator of Ren & Stimpy! These hardback copies will ONLY be available through the "Kitty & Batz" Kickstarter, and will feature Kitty & Batz on the cover, in the artist respective styles.
New comic books on display and ready for Batz & Richard's signing on Monday, October 28, 2013, from 11am until 3pm at Solano Community College's Bookstore! 'Taffy's Nightmare Tales' Issue 1, 'Kitty & Batz' Issue 3, and a whole lot more... See ya there!

"The Good Life Lab: Radical Experiments in Hands-on Living" [storey.com/books/good-life-lab]
by Wendy Jehanara Tremayne [wendyjehanara@gmail.com] [blog.holyscraphotsprings.com].
The stories in The Good Life Lab begin at 80 Acres. At Black Rock City the discovery of a gift economy is the impetus that sets in motion the adventures that follow. With her partner Mikey Sklar the couple quit their NY careers in search of a decommodified life. Inspired by Burning Man's ethos of self reliance the couple built an off grid homestead in southern New Mexico. Today they make their own food, shelter, fuel, power and domestic goods. This book tells their story. The Good Life Lab is practical, it contains lifestyle skills like making your own fuel, building out of waste, remodeling shipping containers, living off grid, recovering dead batteries and hacking appliances and also contemplative, Wendy shows how those alive today are the first generation to experience the whole world for sale. She maps a way to live a decommodified life that is less reliant on money. The book itself is an artwork with a smythe bind and community of illustrators who created florid colorful spreads. Forewords were written by Doug Rushkoff (author of Life Inc. and Present Shock), The Reverend Billy Talen (Church of Stop Shopping), Pir Zia Inayat Khan, Fermentation fetishist Sandor Ellix Katz and others.

Koham Press - Independent Bookstore/Reading Room/Small Press [link]
Koham Press is a small independent bookstore and small press scheduled to open Jan. 2014 in the heart of downtown Vallejo, Ca.
Koham Press is a family-owned business located in Vallejo, Ca. We
want to invest our time and energy into keeping it local. Our vision is
to create a comfortable, quiet space to enjoy a good read and a
welcoming social environment for sharing in creativity. Currently,
there are no bookstores in Vallejo, a void Koham Press intends to fill.
Koham Press will offer a wide variety of new and used books. Most of our new books will come from PM Press, Black Sparrow Books and other local small presses. Recycling is important to us and we will be accepting used books on a credit system.
We will host regular readings, signings, and live music events with a focus on local authors and artists. And, in keeping with the local theme, Koham Press hopes to offer coffee from a local roaster, pastries from a local baker, and chocolates from our local chocolatier.
We want Koham Press to be a place where you can feel at home, so the funds raised from this Kickstarter will go towards creating an interior atmosphere akin to an home library, with floor to ceiling birch shelves, comfy chairs, and fine reading material.

I've dabbled in painting for a few years now, but it was only maybe five months ago I started really working with it. The only place I've sold so far is Moschetti's Coffee Shop, where I've been fairly successful I'd say. I use alot of color in all my pieces, my favorite thing is working with bright colors. Most of my paintings are nature-related, varying from vegetables to flowers, to scenes with trees and birds. Although I also have a few abstracts.

"Mayan-Aztec Fermenting: Cosecha y Comida / Harvest and Eat" description by instructor Francisco Jimenez: Ancient Latin American culture has been fermenting food and drink for thousands of years. Vinegars were made from tropical fruit using natural fermenting agents from sugar and ginger. And, Chicha, a spirit drink made from fermented corn was used by the ancient Mayan-Aztec during spiritual celebrations. Francisco Jimenez from Costa Rica leads this two-part workshop that teaches people how to ferment the Mayan-Aztec way by making vinegars from bananas, plantain and pineapple (Part I) and harvesting 6 weeks later and using it as food, condiments or for healing (Part II). Francisco Jimenez has been activist in the grassroots healthy and organic food movement for over 10 years. He also works for immigrant rights, the homeless population and teaches Spanish in the San Francisco Bay Area.
